Selectors head to Kakul to convince Babar Azam for T20I captaincy

The selectors are set to journey to Kakul this Saturday with the aim of persuading Babar Azam to take up the role of captain for T20Is. This decision emerged from a late-night meeting between Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the selectors on Friday.

The PCB initially wants Babar to assume the captaincy until the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, Babar is inclined towards a more long-term commitment as captain. He has communicated to the Pakistan Cricket Board his wish to lead across all formats if he were to consider captaining the T20I team.

The selectors will endeavour to assure Babar that he will wield complete authority as captain. Sources close to Babar advise him to assert his demands now, citing the board’s current vulnerable position. However, this strategy carries the risk of potential repercussions. Should Babar remain inflexible, the possibility of exploring other captaincy options cannot be discounted.

A decision on the captaincy may be announced by the board during a press conference on Sunday.
